We are lucky to live in a wonderful city that hosts so many free family friendly events, month after month. Here are the top FREE August Perth Family Events, so you can enjoy a day or night out with the family that won't break the bank.


Tuesday 1st to Sunday 6th – Giant Marionette performance, Curtin University

Come down to Curtin University's Bentley campus at 12pm from Tuesday 1st August to Sunday 6th August and be amazed by our resident 5 metre high Giant Marionette performing the spectacular ‘String Symphony’! FREE for staff, students and the wider community, ‘String Symphony’ explores concepts of connection, community and teamwork through a marionette brought to life by Curtin’s talented Theatre Studies students. The marionette is suspended from a five-metre high truss and controlled by ropes on each side by up to 12 people! www.facebook.com/events/

Friday 4th to Sunday 6th – Avon Descent Family Fun Days

For some perfect family fun, check out the Avon Descent Family Fun Days! Competitors from around the world take on 124 gruelling kilometres of white water and marathon flats in a two day time trial in both paddle and power craft. Spectators can enjoy action on the water from riverbank events with race commentary, free entertainment and much more to be found at the Avon Descent Family Fun Days in Northam, Toodyay, Belmont and Bayswater. Sunday 6th – Avon Descent Family Fun Day, Garvey Park Ascot

Get up close to all of the action at the City of Belmont FREE Family Fun Day and celebrate the Avon Descent. Cheer on competitors as they head towards the finish line of this gruelling 124km white water race. The day will feature a large marquee, seating and live race commentary by the waterfront, the race live on the big screen, Helicopter rides, junior Sports Expo and FREE children’s activities. 11:30am to 3:30pm. www.perthtourism.com.au.

Sunday 6th – Avon Descent Festival, Lilac Hill Caversham

Cheer on the competitors of the Avon Descent as they speed on by! Enjoy a bumper program of entertainment all day on the main stage, with performances by The Hunting Birds, Hardeyhaha and Possum Music. Meander around the parkland and soak up Swan Valley cooking demonstrations, a special edition of The Vintage Collective Markets, gourmet food truck fare and heaps of giveaways. Plus a packed line-up of fair rides, crazy critters, fun workshops and activities for all ages in the Midland GateFun Zone! 10am to 3pm. www.facebook.com/events/

Sunday 6th – Aqualife Refresh Open Day, Victoria Park

The Aqualife recreation centre is having a fun family open day to celebrate the new refreshed facilities! 
There will be loads of fun FREE activities for the whole family including: Children's entertainers 
The Lulus Show, Dinosaur robot rides, Bouncy castle, Play-doh dinosaur fossil hunting and Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm. Plus, food vans will be in attendance and there will be trials for kids karate, Zumba and the jungle body. 10am to 2pm. www.facebook.com/events/

Sunday 6th and Sunday 13th – Make a splash, Forrest Place Perth City

Bring your favourite gumboots to Forrest Place for two crafty days in August for 'Making a Splash' in the City. With two designs to choose from, your gumboots will be ready to splash through Forrest Place and embrace the winter weather. Gumboot cookies will also be available to decorate for those feeling a little peckish. If you register early enough you may be able to secure the opportunity to customise your very own umbrella with waterproof fabric markers, stencils and fabric spray to help keep you dry. Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th - Targa West Rally Car Race, Various locations around Perth

Quit Targa West will be transforming the Perth city centre into a car enthusiast’s paradise with a number of car related events, including three rally stages in the heart of Perth’s CBD. Perth’s motorsport fans will be given plenty of opportunity to see the rally vehicles up close and in action. Spectating at Quit Targa West is FREE. Friday 11th and Sunday 13th – Perth Pregnancy, Babies and Children's Expo Claremont Showgrounds

If you get your ticket online entry is free. chat face-to-face with our wide range of Exhibitors to gain up-to-date, expert advice on the early years of parenting. You can also see, touch, try and buy the products and services that best suit your needs. Discover all you need to know for you, your pregnancy or young child! Also enjoy free entertainment for the kids with belly and face painting with the Freedom Fairies, Toddler Kindy Gymbaroo Mini Circuit and Imagination Play area. Saturday 12th - Perth Scorchers Play Cricket Launch Ellenbrook 

Are you interested in learning more about cricket? Want to participate in free and fun activities? At the FREE event, there will be something for the whole family, with appearances from our Perth Scorchers players and club mascots Blaze and Amber. 

The Perth Scorchers Bus will be there as well as the inflatable net, a sausage sizzle and great spot prizes up for grabs.

Parents and kids of all ages are welcome to attend and from 2:00-4:00pm, a MILO T20 Blast pop up session will run for boys and girls aged 7 to 12 years. More information at www.facebook.com/events

Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th – Perth Science Festival, Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

National Science Week is kicking off with a bang with the 2017 Perth Science Festival! Get down to the FREE Perth Science Festival for over 40 interactive stalls, explosive science shows, native animals the list goes on! 10am to 4pm both days. www.scienceweek.net.au/perth-science-festival/

Sunday 13th – UWA Open Day, Crawley

Across the campus there will be free activities and demonstrations for visitors of all ages. Check out robots, virtual reality and augmented reality demonstrations from the UWA Futures Observatory at the Reid Library, join Urban Indigenous and create your own Aboriginal artwork, Games and activities with West Coast Fever players, plus lots more! 10am – 4pm. https://study.uwa.edu.au/openday/

Saturday 19th – ChemCentre Open Day, Curtin University

Discover how science saves the day and make science your mission at ChemCentre Open Day 2017! 
This year’s highlights include:

• Tours of our Forensics and Environmental Chemistry Laboratories

Sunday 20th – Frontiers of Science Community Expo, Kent St Weir Wilson

Get in touch with science and sustainability! Investigate the cutting edge technologies and innovations in science with hands on activities, workshops, presentations and displays for the whole community! Fun for the whole family. There will be solar toys, Scitech shows, Captain Cleanup, rocket science, native animal encounters, prominent Aboriginal presenters, bug science, Mildew Mania, electic cars, face painting, badge making, free native plant give aways, Castledare Miniature Railway rides, sausage sizzle and much more. 10am – 2pm. https://www.scienceweek.net.au/

Wednesday 23rd – Pre Schoolers Morning Waterford Plaza
